Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz

Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz and Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn

Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz discussing stem cell technologies with UCSF Professor Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Prize winner in 2009 in Physiology or Medicine, for her discovery of telomerase, the enzyme that makes telomere DNA. This discovery helped explain how cells age; the solution was found in the ends of the chromosomes, the telomeres and the enzyme that forms them – telomerase. Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack Szostak discovered that a unique DNA sequence in the telomeres protects the chromosomes from degradation.

“As a former senior faculty member at UCSF and The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, I have witnessed great strides in chronic disease management. Yet, many gaps still exist and it is our goal to gain much needed clinical experience with autologous stem cells. The combination of clinical research coupled with basic science research will lead to a greater knowledge base for our current generation of patients needing solutions that go beyond the scope of current therapies.” – Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz

Message from Our Founder

Medical care in our times requires a serious new approach. One that is not led by dogma or preconceived ideas that current science and modern technology are the only ways. One that incorporates entire bodies of knowledge from the past. The epidemic rise in chronic and recalcitrant diseases facing modern society will not yield to arrogance. We must embrace new questions to seek more effective methods.

Anatara Medicine is a serious undertaking. Our Convergence Medicine combines the best of modern medical thought with wisdom dating back thousands of years. It’s an inquiry that will evolve over time, through learning, listening, testing, and measuring outcomes scrupulously.

I have observed firsthand the close-mindedness of the U.S. medical establishment to alternative approaches to medicine. While the general public has gravitated to acupuncture, meditation, nutrition, yoga, and the like, the great majority of physicians have focused on incremental new therapies, newer and more expensive diagnostic techniques, and new ways of specializing; and have lately spent much of their time dealing with the administrative bureaucracy governing compensation. Now, in the hospital cafeteria, instead of an hour-long discussion about a compelling patient over lunch we hear diatribes on DRG codes and new regulations required for reimbursement. This system neither serves the health of individuals or the larger population, nor is it sustainable.

To regain my own sense of wonder for medicine, I have stepped out of that system. I am now synthesizing ideas I have carried with me throughout my 30-year career, fusing the best of modern medicine with more traditional forms. In my experience, ancient medicine offers deep insight into the body’s ecosystem—including innate strengths and weaknesses for each of us as individuals—and it brilliantly provides a vast library of time-tested therapies to choose from and analyze.

To create Anatara, I assembled a world-class group of scientists and practitioners from disparate fields, who can, for the first time, think as a disciplined and determined single unit. Experts in fitness and nutrition for those interested in health optimization; experts in risk assessment; experts in complex disease management—together we have established a unique convergence of the best of different medical lineages. The strategy was designed from the outset to provide better healthcare while advancing overall knowledge. We ask how best to assess each patient, how best to treat and optimize each patient, how best to predict outcomes and how best to prevent adverse outcomes.

I strongly believe that this approach represents our greatest hope for a healthy future, for individuals, employers, and communities. It’s based on a deep regard for the wisdom of our sages and mentors, as well as the most recent computerized and molecular research. It’s truly interdisciplinary, including patients and their families as active participants.

We stand on the shoulders of many giants, both practitioners and patients alike, with respect and gratitude for their powers of observation, their humble beginnings, and their thirst for knowledge and truth. We share that thirst. Following these principles, we can achieve great things together.
