Introducing the Revolutionary Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)

At Anatara Medicine, we continually strive to stay at the forefront of medical advancements, ensuring our patients have access to the latest and most effective treatments and therapies. We are excited to introduce our newest innovative filtration technology, Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), as a powerful and greatly beneficial addition to our ever-evolving list of services, available to our dedicated concierge members.

Experience Advanced Healing with Our New Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)—also known as plasmapheresis—is a 2-hour procedure that filters and then removes a patient’s plasma (the liquid component of blood) and replaces it with a substitute such as albumin. This process can dramatically reduce circulating pathogenic substances and modulate the immune and inflammatory responses.

Why TPE Improves the Body:

Therapeutic plasma exchange acts as a “molecular cleansing” of the bloodstream—rapidly lowering the burden of inflammatory, autoimmune, and toxic factors. It is one of the few therapies that can directly and immediately alter the systemic immune environment, making it uniquely valuable in refractory or rapidly progressing disease states.

How TPE works to improve the body: Mechanisms, clinical uses, and physiological benefits

Mechanisms of Action

  1. Removal of Pathogenic Substances
    • Autoantibodies
    • Pro-inflammatory cytokines
    • Immune complexes
    • Paraproteins and light chains
    • Endotoxins and viral particles
    • Spike protein remnants and autoantibodies in post-COVID syndromes (under investigation)
  2. Immune System Modulation
    • By removing circulating immune mediators and complement components, TPE shifts the immune system toward a less inflammatory state.
    • Reduces immune system “priming” in autoimmune conditions.
    • Enhances regulatory T-cell activity and downregulates autoreactive B and T cells.
  3. Endothelial and Vascular Benefit
    • Reduces endothelial injury by clearing inflammatory lipids and immune complexes.
    • Can decrease vascular permeability and clotting risk in hypercoagulable states.
  4. Resetting Homeostasis
    • TPE is hypothesized to “reset” inflammatory signaling networks, returning cytokine profiles closer to baseline.
    • It removes age-related and disease-associated proteins that accumulate in chronic inflammatory states (e.g., elevated fibrinogen, ferritin, D-dimer, and C-reactive protein).

Biological and Physiological Benefits

System Potential Improvements
Neurological Decreased neuroinflammation, improved cognition, Long COVID, autoimmune encephalitis, MS
Cardiovascular Reduced vascular inflammation, improved endothelial function
Immune / Autoimmune Reduction in autoantibodies, cytokines, complement overactivation
Hematologic Clears paraproteins in plasma cell dyscrasias, reduces viscosity
Metabolic / Anti-aging (experimental) Lowers advanced glycation end-products, lipofuscin, pro-inflammatory cytokines (some longevity researchers propose it reverses elements of “inflamm-aging”)

Replacement Fluids During TPE:

  • Albumin (most common)
  • Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) (used when clotting factors must be maintained)
  • Saline + Albumin Mix (used in volume-sensitive patients)

Health Risks and Notable Considerations:

  • Hypotension, hypocalcemia (due to citrate), bleeding (rare), infections (central line), allergic reactions to replacement fluids.
