Meet Our Founder
Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz is a former Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco (UCSF) and is Founder of Anatara Medicine, a multidisciplinary integrative center in San Francisco.
His training includes a medical degree from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Chief Residency in Anatomic Pathology and Internal Medicine and followed with fellowship training in Cardiology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Center. During his 12 years at Johns Hopkins, he was co-appointed in the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Immunology and Microbiology. His clinical responsibilities were complemented by directing a multidisciplinary NIH-sponsored research team in the study of molecular immunological and genomic mechanisms of inflammation and cell injury, autoimmunity, transplantation, congestive heart failure, and myocarditis.

We, unfortunately, do not take insurance. Our proprietary treatments, therapies, and diagnostics are exclusive, offered by only a few practitioners in the US. As such, insurance companies do not cover these yet.
Yes, we offer Telehealth services to many locations.
Making a trip to our lovely city of San Francisco does not need to happen right away. Based on your initial consultation, what testing has come in, our doctors will tailor recommendations for you, and we will do our best to work around your schedule.
We begin with an in-person or Telemedicine consultation with one or two of our doctors. The doctor(s) will typically recommend conventional and state-of-the-art, leading-edge tests based on the consultation. Some of these tests will likely require a blood draw. Once the test results are back, we will schedule an appointment for the doctor to review your results with you in detail.
The doctor may recommend you begin specific therapies during your initial visit before your labs have come back in certain circumstances. The doctor will discuss any such recommendations with you in detail.
Because Anatara is a leading and cutting-edge treatment center, most therapies will be received at our center in San Francisco, however, where possible, we will work with partnered centers across the country to accommodate your schedule.
Therapies are tailored for you by the doctor and Anatara team based on many variables. We offer individual targeted therapies and some treatment packages, and we will be happy to review those in detail with you once they are recommended. Many of our treatment plans include IV (intravenous) therapies, a very efficient way of administering medications and nutrients into your bloodstream to get to the tissues and cells. Some IVs only take ~ 1.5 hours, while others can take 3.0-4.0 hours, based on the tailored treatments the doctor has recommended
Stage 4 Cancer Symptoms
Cancer disease advancement is divided into four stages. The most advanced stage, known as stage 4, is when cancer cells spread or metastasize to other parts of the body outside of the original tumor site.
Metastatic cancer, or stage 4 cancer, has a variety of symptoms, depending on the kind of cancer. If the cancer reaches stage 4, it will affect not just the site of origin but also other areas that have been affected by it.
Depending on the area that cancer has spread to, it may cause a variety of symptoms.
When it has spread to the lungs:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
When it has spread to the liver
- Pain
- Unexpected weight loss
- Skin yellowing
- Abdominal swelling and fluid
When it has spread to the bones:
- Pain, especially severe back pain plus numbness in a leg
- loss of bowel or bladder control
- Fractures, especially without injury
When it has spread to the brain:
- Headaches or dizziness
- Seizures
- Confusion
- Problems with speech or vision
- Nausea
- Difficulty walking
The Problems with Conventional Stage 4 Cancer Treatment
While new testing methods and better screening has helped detect more cancers, earlier, conventional Stage 4 cancer treatment has not improved very much over the last several decades.
Treatment still employs a brute-force approach of invasive surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, and very toxic drugs.
Such treatments are known to cause damage to the body, suppress the immune system and leave patients with a litany of side-effects.
Main stream medicine (conventional approaches) neglects to address the fundamental question of “how did they get cancer in the first place?”
There are many more options available now than just a few years ago. These new treatment options are less invasive yet equally effective and are based on cutting-edge medical science and technology.
Side Effects of Conventional Cancer Treatments
Opting for conventional cancer treatment comes with many risks and potential side effects. Side effects can occur months or years after treatment.
A significant concern with invasive treatments is that they harm healthy cells and disrupt the body’s natural structures and functions.
Below are some of the common side effects of various conventional cancer treatments.
Radiation Side Effects
Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells.
- Pain, burning, swelling, and skin discoloration (typically red) at the radiation site.
- Blistering or peeling of the skin.
- Fatigue
- Frequent urination
- Difficult or painful urination
- Blood in the urine
- Urinary leakage
- Abdominal cramping

Surgery Side Effects
