Facts About Breast Cancer
According to American Cancer Society, aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States. It represents 1 in 3 (33%) of all new female cancers each year. The average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is 1 in 8.
It is estimated that:
- About 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 51,400 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (the earliest form of breast cancer) will be diagnosed.
- About 43,250 women will die from breast cancer.
Breast Cancer Symptoms
Breast cancer symptoms vary from person to person.
Some women experience no indications or symptoms at all, while others will have symptoms.
The following are some potential warning signs of breast cancer:
- A painful lump under the arm or breast (armpit)
- Breast pain
- Enlarging or thickening of a part of the breast.
- Breast skin becomes irritated or wrinkled.
- Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
- Pain in the nipple area or the nipple pulling inward
- Discharge from the nipple, other than breast milk, which may include blood.

5. Cancer Pain Management
Patients who have received long courses of chemotherapy, surgical resections and/or radiation often experience serious injury to peripheral nerves or scarring causing numbness, tingling or impaired motor function/range of motion. Meet Our Founder
Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz is a former Clinical Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco (UCSF) and is Founder of Anatara Medicine, a multidisciplinary integrative center in San Francisco.
His training includes a medical degree from The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Chief Residency in Anatomic Pathology and Internal Medicine and followed with fellowship training in Cardiology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Center. During his 12 years at Johns Hopkins, he was co-appointed in the Departments of Medicine and Molecular Immunology and Microbiology. His clinical responsibilities were complemented by directing a multidisciplinary NIH-sponsored research team in the study of molecular immunological and genomic mechanisms of inflammation and cell injury, autoimmunity, transplantation, congestive heart failure, and myocarditis.

Cancer Treatment Testimonial
I was diagnosed Stage IV, endometrial adenocarcinoma (uterine cancer) with metastasis in early 2020. I had surgery shortly after and then pursued a course of low dose IPT chemo out of state through July of 2020. Two successive MRIs revealed lesions in my abdomen and liver that were growing. With progression of cancer, I turned to Anatara.
My first visit to Anatara was August 2020 under the care Dr. Lee, a Functional Medicine doctor. I began a mycotoxin analysis and mold detox program, attended practitioner-led EFT sessions and completed a Constitutional Diet Analysis. I started weekly IVs at various times over the course of the following year. Using the RGCC tests and Dr. Lee’s advice for guidance, I added many supplements and used their immunotherapies.
The results have been dramatic. In August 2021, my pet scan resulted in “no evidence of metastatic disease” which some call No Evidence of Disease. Very important lab test levels that Anatara was tracking continued to improve including my circulating tumor cell count (CTC). My Vitamin D level was boosted to 100. The level of mycotoxins in my body continued to drop. I feel absolutely fantastic and have exceeded the initial prognosis I was given. I consider Anatara to be my best kept secret.
I cannot say enough about the entire staff of professionals at Anatara. Dr. Herskowitz is brilliant at reading my pathology, imaging and obscure lab reports. I really count on his guidance in outsmarting cancer and building a course of action. Dr. Lee is amazing in her approach to whole body health and supporting the immune system. We, unfortunately, do not take insurance. Our proprietary treatments, therapies, and diagnostics are exclusive, offered by only a few practitioners in the US. As such, insurance companies do not cover these yet.
Yes, we offer Telehealth services to many locations.
Making a trip to our lovely city of San Francisco does not need to happen right away. Based on your initial consultation, what testing has come in, our doctors will tailor recommendations for you, and we will do our best to work around your schedule.
We begin with an in-person or Telemedicine consultation with one or two of our doctors. The doctor(s) will typically recommend conventional and state-of-the-art, leading-edge tests based on the consultation. Some of these tests will likely require a blood draw. Once the test results are back, we will schedule an appointment for the doctor to review your results with you in detail.
The doctor may recommend you begin specific therapies during your initial visit before your labs have come back in certain circumstances. The doctor will discuss any such recommendations with you in detail.
Because Anatara is a leading and cutting-edge treatment center, most therapies will be received at our center in San Francisco, however, where possible, we will work with partnered centers across the country to accommodate your schedule.
Therapies are tailored for you by the doctor and Anatara team based on many variables. We offer individual targeted therapies and some treatment packages, and we will be happy to review those in detail with you once they are recommended. Many of our treatment plans include IV (intravenous) therapies, a very efficient way of administering medications and nutrients into your bloodstream to get to the tissues and cells. Some IVs only take ~ 1.5 hours, while others can take 3.0-4.0 hours, based on the tailored treatments the doctor has recommended
The Problems with Conventional Cancer Treatment
Conventional cancer treatment usually boils down to invasive surgical procedures, toxic chemotherapy, and cancer drugs.
Surgical interventions usually involve the removal of breast tissue (breast-conserving surgery) or, more frequently, the removal of the entire breast as in a mastectomy.
In both cases, an additional procedure called a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is commonly performed to remove lymph nodes.
If only breast-conserving surgery is done, this is usually followed by radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy may also be recommended, which is very toxic to the body, leading to a wide range of side effects.
Side Effects of Conventional Cancer Treatments
Opting for conventional cancer treatment comes with many risks and potential side effects. Side effects can even occur months or years after treatment.
A significant concern with invasive treatments is that they harm healthy cells and disrupt the body’s natural structures and functions.
Below are some of the common side effects of various conventional cancer treatments.
Radiation Side Effects
- Radiation to the chest area can cause heart problems like congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats causing light-headedness, chest pain, and shortness of breath).
- Pain, burning, swelling, and skin discoloration (typically red) at the radiation site (often the breast). This may lead to blistering or peeling of the skin.
- Radiation to the chest area can cause damage to the lungs; radiation may burn a bit of the lung and cause it to swell (pneumonitis).
- Weakening of the bones in the treated area, which can lead to rib and collarbone fractures.
- Damage to the nerves in the arm on the treated side, which may cause tingling, numbness, pain, weakness, and possibly some loss of movement.
- Hardening of breast tissue called fibrosis.
- Broken blood vessels under the skin, known as telangiectasia, are permanent and untreatable.
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weakness and fatigue
- Mouth sores
- Hair loss
- Constipation
- Weight gain
- Higher risk of infections due to treatments weakening your immune system
- Infertility
- Brain fog
- Mental health and emotional issues stemming from treatment.
Chemotherapy Side Effects

Surgery Side Effects
- Pain
- Lymphedema, a painful condition where lymph fluid builds up in the tissues, causing swelling and pain.

- Phantom breast pain
- Axillary web syndrome – Sensitivity at the site of a sentinel lymph node biopsy can develop as a side effect. A network of thick, rope-like structures may be seen or felt beneath the skin on your inner arm. The cords are usually unpleasant and taut and can significantly impact your day-to-day life, making it difficult to lift your arm higher than shoulder height.
Emotional Side Effects
- Often following invasive procedures and chemotherapy, a person can develop emotional issues such as anxiety, depression and fear of recurrence.
- Cancer drugs can cause various cognitive, mental and emotional side effects.
- Family and friends watching their loved ones go through surgery and chemotherapy also suffer trauma from the experience.
Drug Side Effects
- Some cancer drugs cause high blood pressure (hypertension), lung problems, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, muscle, and joint pain, thinning hair, and elevated cholesterol.
- Some drugs block estrogen from attaching to cancer cells, and can lead to hot flashes and vaginal dryness, discharge, or bleeding. It may also be linked in very rare cases to cataracts, blood clots, and uterine cancer.
